| Polly arrived in Boston on a ship involved in the Boston Tea Party. |
When we were asked to make a doll like Polly Sumner, our
research into antique wood dolls began in earnest. Friends and acquaintances gave us bits and pieces of information
from magazines and books. We soon came to realize there was no single source available. (This was prior to publication
of HEART OF THE TREE by Rosalie Whyel.) We began to visualize a power point program that would include
all the historical information we gathered. After the first presentation of the program, we learned most people had
little concept of how joints worked, how eyes differed and other factors necessary to placing a doll in the correct period
of time. It is difficult to see this in a picture. Jim began to work on his interpretation of various dolls, doing
them in 10 to 12 inch size. These dolls are part of that research. The dolls are dressed by Irene using fabrics
and sewing methods appropriate to the time period. The program 200 YEARS OF WOOD DOLLS is available
for presentation to clubs or interested groups.
